The independent MCP guide for business

Connect AI to your business software safely

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the open standard that lets AI assistants like Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot talk to your CRM, accounting software or database. MCP Store explains in plain English how it works, which MCP servers you can trust, and what to watch out for in terms of security and regulation.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open connectivity standard that links AI applications to external tools, data sources and business systems in one uniform way — the "USB-C port for AI". Instead of building a custom integration for every combination of AI app and system, you need just one MCP server per system and one MCP client per application.

MCP was launched by Anthropic in November 2024 and has been governed since December 2025 by the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation — with backing from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and AWS. That makes it vendor-neutral infrastructure, not a proprietary product. Adoption is now universal: according to the Linux Foundation's press release, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor and VS Code all support MCP as full clients, and at the release of the final spec version (July 2026) the maintainers reported close to half a billion SDK downloads per month. According to the 2026 Stacklok survey, 41% of software organisations are already running MCP in limited or broad production. In short: anyone deploying AI in a business context will run into MCP.

Who is this site for?

Decision-makers (executives, management) will find answers to the strategic questions: what can AI do with our systems, what value does it deliver, what risks do we run, and what does the regulator expect from us? Start with what is MCP and MCP and EU regulation.

IT managers and compliance officers use this site to assess requests from the business: is this MCP server trustworthy, what access does the AI model get, and how do you set up access control? Start with security and the sector directory.

Developers will find technical depth: the architecture, transports, spec versions and a practical build guide. Start with how MCP works and building an MCP server, with the glossary as a reference.

Current: MCP spec 2026-07-28 released, AI Act partly in force

On 28 July 2026 the final new version of the MCP specification (2026-07-28) was released — according to the maintainers the biggest revision since launch, with a stateless core, a formal extension model (including MCP Apps) and stricter authorization requirements. The older session model with the initialize handshake is now considered legacy. Read our news article on the stateless spec or the technical explanation on how MCP works. Since 2 August 2026 the transparency obligations (Art. 50) of the EU AI Act also apply, and the European Commission can enforce against providers of general-purpose AI; the full high-risk obligations have been postponed via the Digital Omnibus (Regulation 2026/1744) to 2 December 2027 and 2 August 2028.
